Angamedilla National Park is one of Sri Lanka’s newer national parks having been established in 2006. Originally a forest reserve as a part of the Girithale Sanctuary, the park was repurposed to secure the basin of the Parakrama Samudraya, a significant water body in Sri Lanka.
The Angammedilla park is bordered on the south by the Amban river and a mountain range stretches all the way across this national park in Sri Lanka, giving it a very diverse topography as well as a highly scenic quality. The park is generally dry, except for the mountain regions, which receive a decent amount of rain in the wet season.
You can travel inside the park both by 4 wheel drive as well as foot, but traveling by foot definitely gives you a better feel for the ambience of this lesser known and therefore more secluded national park in Sri Lanka. There are a number of excellent hiking trails in this national park in Sri Lanka, and experienced local guides are on hand to help you if you should need it.
Being located in close proximity to many other attractions, Angammedilla is the perfect national park to take a relaxing hike after you have had your fill of the magnificent ancient ruins in the area. Our recommended places to stay include Seerock The King’s Domain, Water Garden Sigiriya and the Chaaya Hotel.
