Delft National Park

A national park that is only for the serious searcher for off the beaten track experiences, Delft national park is located on the island of Delft, around 22km south-west of Jaffna, Sri Lanka’s northernmost city. The most remarkable thing about Delft Island is its population of wild ponies, the only one of its kind in Sri Lanka. They are said to have been brought to the island by the Portuguese. The Dutch also used them and the British used the island for breeding horses.

The island has a fantastical landscape, with baobab trees that will render a post-apocalyptic sheen that will excite and titillate the senses. Another exciting part about getting to Delft is to take the ferry, this is one of the most adventurous public transportation experiences you can have in Sri Lanka. Delft can also be a great place for birdwatching. Walk about this very unusual island and experience its unique landscape.

Delft is a great day trip to make if you are exploring the Northern province. Jaffna has plenty of great places to stay in such as the Margosa Green Hotel and the Fox Resort Jaffna. This northern city of Sri Lanka also has plenty of other historical, cultural and natural attractions which will certainly bring about a fulfilling experience of Sri Lanka.
