Hikkaduwa Beach

Hikkaduwa, 98 km South of Colombo and accessible via a one hour drive, bus or train, was the first of Sri Lanka’s beaches to be discovered by tourists, as early as the 1960s. Hikkaduwa is located an easy drive from Galle, just 14 km away.

Diving, snorkelling and swimming are the major pastimes along this stretch of idyllic beach in Sri Lanka, and of course sunbathing. Hikkaduwa also has a large coral sanctuary, in a large shallow body of water protected by a reef. Here you can find layers and layers of multi-colored corals and many colorful fish, turtles and other forms of marine life. If you want to remain dry, simply take a glass bottomed boat!

If you’re a serious diver you can explorht e the multiple shipwrecks languishing off the coast. You can rent gear at local diving shops and obtain training and lessons from here as well.

Hikkaduwa boasts plenty of beachfront accommodation and many great restaurants within easy reach. The seafood served on this stretch of beach in Sri Lanka is legendary. The resort area has expanded so much that it has engulfed two to three villages around the initial area of interest, and has many shops, bars, restaurants and other outlets.

Some of the places we like and would recommend you consider staying at are the Riff Hikkaduwa, Villa 96, Villa 46, Aditya, Villa Saffron Hikkaduwa, Roman Beach and Wirdana Spa and Villas. A few minutes away is the Geoffrey Bawa designed Jetwing Lighthouse and Jetwing Lighthouse club. Jetwing Kurulubedda, located in the mangroves, is a cosy, quiet little resort excellent for that perfect couple getaway.

Closer to Hikkaduwa Kum Beach, The Sandals by Edward Collection and River House by Asia Leisure are also luxurious, intimate spaces for the discerning traveler to Hikkaduwa, Sri Lanka.

Hikkaduwa is in great proximity to Galle, where you can see the awe inspiring Galle Fort easily on day trips. There are also several other beaches where you can surf, sunbathe and relax close by. Including of course, the beautiful Unawatuna, just 17 kilometres away.
