Negombo Beach

Negombo is a beach town located very close to the Bandaranaike International Airport, on the West coast of Sri Lanka. It is a popular destination for tourists who are leaving and entering Sri Lanka, offering rest and relaxation, the perfect place to prepare for or to end an enjoyable journey through the country!

A bustling city and town, Negombo was an important cinnamon producer during the Dutch era. If you have the time to walk through the Negombo town, you will see many signs of European colonialism.

One of the things that strikes out at you immediately are the number of churches. This is because many areas of Negombo are primarily Christian and Catholic, most of these were due to conversions which were carried out during the Portuguese and subsequent Dutch and English periods. Negombo is also fondly called “Little Rome” because of all the Catholics but also because of all the migrant workers who have left here to work in Italy.

There are plenty of fisherfolk plying the seas off the coast of the Negombo Beach. This is an excellent place to watch the big nets being pulled in, and even to help in the process. The sleek little catamarans and sailboats with their often colorful sails are a characteristic of the landscape of Negombo.

The Negombo beach is wide and expansive and is superb for walking. Being largely empty sand, it offers a fantastic contrast from much of the development you might see on smaller beaches elsewhere. The sunsets from Negombo are spectacular and are best enjoyed sipping a king coconut or something stronger from a beach chair.

Negombo is a great place to enjoy resort life in Sri Lanka, many people opt for the buffets offered in resorts which are of great quality and value for money. Some of the best ones include Jetwing Beach, Jetwing Blu, Water Land, Jetwing Lagoon, Heritance Negombo, Jetwing Sea, Pledge 3, Hotel Goldi Sands, Terrace Green Hotel and Spa and Jetwing Ayurveda Pavilion.
