Nilaweli / Uppuweli
Uppuveli is a famous beach located in Trincomalee, about 6-10 hours from Colombo, Sri Lanka’s capital city, depending on the transport medium. This beautiful spot in the Northeast coast of Sri Lanka can be reached by car, bus or train. Being located in the thick of a historic, culturally diverse and vibrant city, we suggest you take at least 2 days to enjoy what Trincomalee and Uppuveli have to offer.
Uppuveli is far more secluded than its counterparts, and by Sri Lanka’s East coast standards, that means you are guaranteed access to a peaceful, private holiday experience. There are less crowds here and the beachfront isn’t as full of restaurants and bars as other locations. The beach is very long and you can walk for ages amidst the tranquil sand dunes and dashing surf, with friendly stray dogs and locals greeting you along the way.
Plenty of fishermen ply their trade here and a fantastic thing to do in Uppuveli is to go out and help them drag their nets and boats in during the morning and the evening. The locals at Uppuveli are friendly and welcoming and love to share a meal or drink with you, as long as you contribute your own share too!
The sand here is lovely and the sea slopes very gently so it is possible to enjoy a nice swim when the water is not too rough in Uppuveli. The low season is particularly friendly in Uppuveli because even as the flow of tourists falls, the sunbathing here gets much better.
Uppuveli is also within shouting distance of Trincomalee’s main attractions. Walk all the way down the beach to encounter Lover’s Leap, the iconic and tragic landmark characterized by the number of young couples who have flung themselves off its edges in a desperate rebellion against cultural norms that restrict inter cast, inter religious and other forms of unions. The Koneswaram temple is found just nearby to Lover’s Leap and from here you can contemplate the blue distance of the Indian Ocean and get panoramic views of the city and sea.
