Talalla is the perfect unspoilt beach and a top contender for the ‘best beach in Sri Lanka’ title. Tucked away in a little corner between Matara and Tangalle, Talalla can be accessed in about 3 hours by car from Colombo.
Talalla has a gentle curve of golden sand periodically and gently caressed by a lapping ocean. It is largely quiet and uncrowded still, and on Poya days and holidays you will see plenty of locals there to enjoy the sun and surf, a hidden gem for sure.
Another characteristic of Talalla are the beautiful and colorful fishing boats known as ‘oruwa’ or catamarans you will see pulled up on to the beach. These simple vessels are used for fishing and when beached are weighed down by simple rock weights. The East end of the beach is recommended for staying in because it is more quiet, the West end is close to the main road and the traffic.
Talalla has plenty of local Air BnB options, guest houses and hostels you can stay at. There are also a few world class resorts and boutique hotels which now call this stretch of beach a home. Talalla Retreat features luxury beach accommodations, fine organic dining, spa, surf, yoga and wellness retreats. While Zephyr Talalla offers free Wifi, a sun terrace and a garden pool which is an amazing little alcove of paradise.
Localed on the main highway from Matara to the South, Talalla is an easy distance from some of the main beaches and other attractions in the area. Easy surfing can be found in Hiriketiya, along with hip varieties of food and plenty of backpacker culture. For live music Hiriketiya is great but also consider going to Polhena which also features the occasional farmers market or two.
Even beaches like Mirissa and Weligama can be reached via Talalla with some effort. A favourite thing to do is to go out and enjoy these attractions and activities, and then come back into the peaceful embrace of tranquil Talalla.
