Weligama Beach

A wide, generously big, sandy crescent smack in the South of Sri Lanka, Weligama is roughly 2-3 hours away from Colombo if you take the Southern Expressway to get there. You can also reach it by bus and train, although this might take you anything from 3-5 hours depending on the day.

Weligama, which means city of sand, is an ancient city which has also played a significant role in Sri Lankan sovereign history. It was here that the famous Sri Lankan king Parakramabahu sent his general Rakkha to suppress the Southern Province.

A rather sleepy fishing and port town, Weligama has seen a new lease of life after it became a tourist hotspot. It is an ideal surfing spot because it caters both to the novice and the experienced surfer and is a great place for windsurfing as well. See of you can participate in a deep sea fishing trip, or at the very least take a boat for a ride across the water to experience the best of Weligama bay.

As you approach the bay from the North road you will notice a beautiful island with turquoise blue waters around it called Taprobane, which has many other local names also. You will also see several stilt fishermen along the coast, perching on their crosses like liberated messiahs and poised hunting birds all rolled into one.

Weligama is home to the excellent Weligama Bay Marriott Resort and Spa, a towering construction which cannot be missed from anywhere in the bay as you take in the mostly flat landscape. If you want something smaller, and cosier, why not try out W15, the luxurious boutique hotel right next to it?

We Escape, Weligama Bay Resort, Eraeliya Villas and Garden, Elephant Stables Weligama Bay and Cape Weligama are also fantastic places for the luxury traveler to experience Weligama, one of Sri Lanka’s best beaches.

Surfing being such a popular activity, Weligama has plenty of surf camps that train anyone from novices to professionals, you can always improve! Surf camps are also a great way to meet people and experience life in the South coast of Sri Lanka within a safe, fun environment. The Surfer Surf Camp Sri Lanka, Elsewhere Surf Camps and plenty of other establishments offer services in Weligama.

The Weligama town is a bustling area that still retains a rural charm, and also offers up some delicious local food. Weligama also has plenty of hip cafes, hostels and other spaces to relax, listen to live music and enjoy your time with friends and family.
